Good Ground: The Rocky Ground = Quick Joy, No Roots

In this message, we continue our series through Jesus’ Parable of the Sower by focusing on the seed that falls on rocky ground. Jesus describes a faith that receives the Word with joy and springs up quickly, but because it has no deep root, it withers when trouble, persecution, or costly obedience comes.

This sermon challenges us to look beneath the surface of our faith. Quick growth, emotional beginnings, and visible enthusiasm can be encouraging—but Jesus calls us to something deeper: a life rooted in Him. Through biblical examples like King Saul, the rich young ruler, Job, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, Mary, and Peter, we see how trials do not create our roots as much as they reveal them.

God is lavish and generous with His Word, like the sower scattering seed everywhere. The question is not whether the seed is good or whether the Sower is gracious—the question is whether we will allow the Word to go deep. May we be a people whose faith endures suffering, disappointment, and pressure because we are rooted in Christ, connected to His people, and strengthened by His Spirit.
